First let me say that I like the erotic romance genre to start with, but Private Reserve exceeded my expectations in so many ways: The main characters and supporting characters are in my age group of forty and over, and they are youthful, adventurous, attractive, interesting and complex. I like the way the author developed them because I favour character-driven stories. There is so much more to the story than sex, but the sex scenes are well written; not gratuitous, repetitive nor boring and become a very important part of the romance and falling deeply in love. Still, if you are offended by explicit sex regardless of the context, this book will probably not be for you. Also, if you like a quick, effortless read, this might not be a suitable book. If you like a substantial read with well laid out details and an intriguing engaging plot that keeps you on your toes, this book is definitely for you. The story gives us more than a glimpse into the glamorous side of the wine business; something the author knows quite a lot about, since she is a wine agent and her field is upscale wine. She gets into wines quite heavily, though there is so much more than that going on. This book is even a bit of a travel log (Montreal, Bordeaux, Rome) and there is no doubt that the author is well acquainted with her settings, which adds to the authenticity. Also adding to the authenticity is the fact that a lot of research went into this book. The author built her story around family and friendship and loyalty which was a nice touch, but at the end of the day, I want romance with a capital "R" and there is plenty of it in Private Reserve; not that it is smooth sailing all the way by any means (where's the fun in that?). There are twists and turns and I love it when you don't see things coming. That to me is essential to a good story. The author has gotten it right in that the characters are so likable, that we care about them and want that happy ending for them. While our principal characters are getting their "happily ever after", the author sets up the story for the next book in the series brilliantly. Highly recommended and eagerly awaiting book 2.
